Degree Programs

HGSE offers 13 degree programs at the master's level, training professionals in such areas as Teacher Education, School Leadership, Risk & Prevention, and Mind, Brain, and Education. HGSE's doctoral program focuses on research in education and has six concentrations: Culture, Communities, and Education; Education Policy, Leadership, and Instructional Practice; Human Development and Education; Higher Education; Quantitative Policy Analysis; and Urban Superintendency. Graduates of the program engage in teaching, research, policy, and practice with roughly half pursuing careers as university faculty or career researchers.

Enrollment

In 2005-2006:

  • 610 masters and certificate of advanced study students
  • 370 doctoral students
  • 735 women (75%)
  • 258 people of color (27%)
  • 112 international students (12%)

Graduates

During the 2004-2005 school year, Harvard Graduate School of Education granted:

  • 43 doctoral degrees
  • 620 masters degrees

Career Choices:

  • Overall, across all cohorts and degrees, over 2/3 of HGSE's graduates are employed in education.
  • Among Ed.M. graduates, over half are employed in K-12 education (with the majority serving as classroom teachers).
  • Among Ed.D. graduates, nearly half are employed in higher education (split about evenly between research and teaching positions in a higher education setting).
