The purpose of this introductory module is to familiarize students with the philosophical, theoretical, and pedagogical principles underlying literacy methods and materials in grades 4 through 12. A primary focus of the module is on how reading and writing can complement each other while supporting content-based inquiry (also called reading and writing across the curriculum or content-area reading and writing). Using a workshop format, students examine practical applications to teaching. Course requirements include completion of a weekly reflection journal and a final paper, a study-group project and presentation, preparation for and participation in classroom discussion, and completion of other assignments and activities.
