Last year, approximately 11% of the applicant pool was admitted. How heavily is each piece of the application (i.e. grades, test scores) weighed?Admissions committees take a holistic approach in reviewing applications for admission. Academic records, test scores, recommendations, work history and the statement of purpose are all evaluated carefully to determine the applicant's fit and potential within the program. How long does the program take to complete?Approximately 4-7 years; the average length is 6 years. Is a master's degree required for admission into the doctoral program?A master's degree is not required for admission, but due to the competitive nature of the program, many successful applicants have had previous graduate work in education or in a related field. Is work experience required? What kind of work experience does the committee look for?Most admitted students have related work experience before entering the program with the average amount being 5-6 years. It is not a requirement but can make an applicant more competitive. The selection committee looks for relevant work experience in your area of interest or diverse backgrounds that would provide different perspectives. Research experience can also be applicable. How much does the program cost?The tuition for the 2007-2008 school year is $31,696. The total estimated student budget is $54,828. Does HGSE accept transfer credits from other universities?No, HGSE does NOT accept transfer credits from other universities. Students who have graduated with a HGSE Ed.M. or C.A.S. within three years of enrolling as doctoral students will receive doctoral credit (academic only) for four courses (16 credits) completed during their Ed.M. or C.A.S. courses of study. Transfer credit from other institutions is not accepted. Can the doctoral program be done part-time?The doctoral program requires that students attend full-time due to the intensive nature of the program. Can the doctoral program be completed online or by distance education?Course work requirements must be completed in residence at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
