Special Students

Applicants who wish to take up to two courses per year at the Harvard Graduate School of Education without the constraints of a formal degree program may wish to apply for Special Student status. This option is available for professional educators seeking to enhance current work, college or university faculty from institutions other than Harvard, and advanced graduate students seeking to enhance their degree program.

A limited number of applicants may be admitted for non-degree study each year. Course enrollment is on a space-available basis. Please note that Special Students are not eligible for HGSE funding, housing, or office space. Apply to become a Special Student.

Berkeley Exchange Program

Berkeley Exchange Program enables a doctoral student who has completed residence at HGSE for the equivalent of two academic years to study at the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley, for one or two semesters. HGSE students at Berkeley will continue to pay HGSE tuition, and their Berkeley grades will be recorded on their HGSE transcripts. Permission to study at Berkeley requires the approval of the student's advisor, the area chair, and the HGSE academic dean. Applications are available from the Office of the Registrar.
