As an education reporter, John has been unwavering in his dedication to digging beyond the headlines to cover subjects that, while often unrecognized, are imperative to student success. With skill and objectivity, he has captured our nation's varied perspectives on education at the elementary, secondary, and post-secondary levels. A former teacher, John brings a grounded and insightful commitment to using media to inform Americans of critical gaps in our educational system. He has brought vital attention to issues ranging from teacher development, to the quality of colleges and universities, to educational access and opportunity. As an agent of change, John has the ability to integrate the concerns and interests of teachers, administrators, policymakers, and parents. He has fostered common ground and understanding nationwide about the importance of thoughtful approaches to educational reform. For these and other profound contributions to the field of education, it is with great respect that we honor John Merrow with the 2006 Alumni Council Award. About the AwardThe HGSE Alumni Council first established the Alumni Award for Outstanding Contribution to Education in 1985 in order to recognize the significance of service to education by many alumni of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Each year, the Alumni Relations Office solicits nominations for the Award from the alumni body. Candidates must be graduates of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and have made a significant contribution to education during their professional careers.
