Why Does the HGSE Alumni Council Give to the HGSE Fund?

I serve on the Alumni Council and give to the HGSE Fund as a way of expressing my gratitude for all that Harvard has given me. As importantly, I serve and give because I support the leadership of the School and the School’s bold vision and efforts to strengthen education for students at all levels, and most urgently for those currently underserved.
-Sarah Levine, Ed.M.'77, Ed.D.'80
Former Principal and Education Consultant, Denver, CO

I can't think of an enterprise more important than education. I give back because of what HGSE gave me – an extraordinary education, a new and vastly expanded perspective on my own work and an immensely valuable network – a set of colleagues and friends I will have for the rest of my professional life.
-Margaret 'Jay' Braatz, Ed.M.'93, Ed.D.'99
Senior Executive for Presidential Operations, DePaul University, Chicago, IL

I give because HGSE is uniquely positioned with the relentless and determined focus on K-16 education. From developing world citizens skilled in intercultural learning to political advocacy for national education reform, my dollars at HGSE get to work!
-Ande Diaz, Ed.M.' 94
Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Intercultural Center,
Roger Williams University, Bristol, RI

I give to the HGSE Fund to honor my experience there, and to show my appreciation for the impact – personal and professional – that the School has had on my life.
-Marc Johnson, Ed.M. '99
Associate Director of Leadership Gifts, Boston College, Boston, MA

As a teacher, it is gratifying to know that my contribution –combined with those of others – may make it possible for someone to enter our profession who might not otherwise be able to do so. Because of this, I know that I’m not only supporting the Ed School as an institution, but more directly, HGSE students and future educators.
-Marc Lewis, Ed.M.'99
Seventh Grade Teacher, RJ Grey Junior High School, Acton, MA

As a classroom teacher, my income probably does not match that of many other HGSE alums, but I think it is important to show my support for the work that HGSE is doing to improve education around the country. The Ed School continues to be a leading voice in education research and policy development and I hope my involvement with HGSE helps to influence a renewed commitment toward teacher education and promotion of best practices.
-Robert Parlin, Ed.M.'87
History Teacher, Newton South High School, Newton, MA

I give to the HGSE Fund to support the outstanding faculty, groundbreaking research, innovative programming and most importantly, the talented students who will be future leaders. Support for HGSE is an investment in education!
-Deborah Hirsch, Ed.M.'86, Ed.D.'89
Interim Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, Mount Ida College, Newton, MA

I contribute annually to the HGSE Fund because HGSE has made a significant difference in my life; it has opened doors for me and continues to fuel my passion for transforming urban public education.
-Darnell Williams, Ed.M. '96
Induction Director, Boston Teacher Residency Program, Boston, MA

I give to HGSE because my tremendously valuable experiences there were supported by others and I want to reciprocate that support for others who would otherwise not be able to attend. Giving enhances the way in which I am acknowledged as an alum and I feel freer to be a critical voice.
-Anthony De Jesus, Ed.M.'97, Ed.D.'03
Assistant Professor, Hunter College School of Social Work, New York, NY

Giving to the HGSE Fund is my way of acknowledging what the school gave to me. Attending HGSE was a defining point in my life. The faculty and students I met there gave me a sense of self and tools to effectively pursue my passion for teaching, learning and education reform. Thank you, HGSE, for your many gifts to me--this is my small gift to you.
-Irene Hall, C.A.S'93, Ed.D.'05
