Stories of Impact
The Harvard Graduate School of Education makes a difference through countless
women and men who have dedicated themselves to the task of improving the

Soo Hong, Ed.D. Candidate

Upon the approval of HGSE doctoral student Soo
Hong's dissertation proposal in May, she got on a plane to
begin her research on a Chicago community organization's work
with immigrant parents.

Today's educational leaders bear an unprecedented
responsibility in preparing K–12 students to enter a global
knowledge economy. These students will graduate into a world more
demanding than anything envisioned when their teachers and administrators
were in school. How do the classrooms, schools, and districts these
administrators lead need to be different? How can they bring about
these changes? And, most importantly, How may the leaders themselves
need to change in order to bring these changes about?

Jacqui Deegan, Ed.M. '93

As a producer of Arthur, an Emmy-award
winning animated series that airs daily on PBS Kids, and Time
Warp Trio, a history cartoon aired weekly on NBC, Deegan is
always thinking about education.

Liliana Garces, Ed.D candidate

When doctoral student Liliana Garces, a former
attorney, had the chance this past summer to work with lecturer
Gary Orfield and the Civil Rights Project on a case about racial
desegregation being litigated before the U.S. Supreme Court, it
didn't take long for her to sign on.

John Merrow, Ed.D. '73

Beginning on National Public Radio (NPR) in 1974,
John Merrow created interesting and lively radio broadcasts that
exposed the issues lurking below education's surface. Through
the years, he's most known for his work on The Merrow
Report, as well as The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour on
PBS.
