Placing Materials on Reserve

The Library uses the Reserves List Tool to manage reserves. Library staff will provide help for any reserve processing questions that arise. The LTC Help Desk will assist with technical questions about setting up your course reserve tool.

Instructions:

Note: Gutman does not place books from other Harvard libraries on reserve.

New books to be purchased by Gutman

  • Place requests as soon as possible.
  • Complete a new citation request in the Reserves List Tool.
  • Complete a workform if the Reserves List Tool is not yet available.
  • Allow a minimum of six weeks for new books to arrive

Books previously on reserve

  •  Locate the citation in the Reserves List Tool and select it to resubmit for the upcoming semester.

Books not previously on reserve but owned by Gutman

  • Create a new citation request in the Reserves List Tool.

Personal Copies

  • Gutman will place personal copies on Reserve if they are not available.
  • Personal copies will be identified with a tag and barcode taped to the inside cover. All reserve materials will be retained on reserve until the end of the semester.

Reprints

  • Before submitting a reprint, please use Citation Linker to find whether the article is available online.
  • Include only one reprint per folder and limit multiple copies to a maximum of three.
  • Please provide only single-sided copies and do not staple pages together- use a paper clip.
  • Please label folders with the author's last name and the title on the tab, then with the tab on the top edge, course number and copy number on the top right, and professor's name on the bottom right.
  • Please make folder, syllabus, and library workform information consistent.
  • Please leave readings in their original folders when resubmitting readings in subsequent semesters.
  • Do not make new folders unless the original ones are damaged.
  • The library does not place readings from course packets on reserve.
  • Harvard University policies include Copyright and Licensing Restrictions and compliance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

  • When in doubt about fair use, seek copyright permission by contacting Annemari Korte.

Lecture Videos

  • Please label each DVD and/or VHS tape clearly with the course number, instructor name and date of lecture.
  • Each item must be placed in a cover, as we cannot place a barcode directly on the tape or DVD.
  • Videotapes of lectures will be placed on reserve as soon as they are submitted - you do not need to fill out any forms.
  • Bring the items to the Circulation Desk, attn: Reserves

Please leave all materials with a staff member.
