to Comment on Clinton's Speech on School Violence
President Clinton spoke on school violence in Worcester, Massachusetts
today.
Michael Nakkula, Assistant Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate
School of Education and Margot Welch, Director of the Collaborative for
Integrated School Services, are available for interview or comment on
Clinton's speech, violence in schools, and promising school- and
community-based violence prevention and mentoring programs in Massachusetts
and across the country.
Mike Nakkula specializes in applying psychology and education theory
to the real-world difficulties of at-risk children and adolescents. His
research focuses on ways to improve the study of child and adolescent
high-risk behavior. Nakkula is the founder of Project IF, a school and
community-based mentoring program in Massachusetts. Nakkula holds the
Kargman Chair for Human Development in Urban Education Advancement at
the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Margot Welch founded The Collaborative for Integrated School Services
(CISS) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1991 to provide
professional support and workshops for school counselors working to make
a lasting difference in the lives of at-risk kids. Since 1993, CISS has
sponsored local and national training programs for school counselors,
psychologists, social workers, and nurses on such topics as "Resilient
Youth in a Violent World: New Perspectives and Practices" and "Sexual
Abuse: Helping Kids Cope in Schools."
