News Features & ReleasesWarren's Article Acknowledged by Association of Educational PublishersJuly 10, 2006HGSE Associate Professor Mark Warren was recently selected as a finalist for the Distinguished Achievement Award for Best Learned Article from the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP). "It's a great honor to be named a finalist for this award," Warren said. "I believe it is critically important for scholars to present the results of their research in a way that is accessible to a broader public." The AEP, a nonprofit organization that focuses on educational publishing, selects finalists based on their quality of writing, educational value, originality, and audience interest. Warren's article, "Communities and Schools: A New View of Urban Education Reform," was published in the Summer 2005 issue of the Harvard Educational Review. "[In the article,] I draw upon social capital theory to show why we need to link school reform to community revitalization in America's low-income urban communities," Warren said. Warren is a sociologist concerned with the revitalization of American
democratic and community life. He studies efforts to strengthen institutions
that anchor inner-city communities--churches, schools, and other
community-based organizations--and to build broad-based alliances
among these institutions and across race and social class. Warren is
interested in the development of community leaders through involvement
in multiracial political action as well as the outcomes of such efforts
in fostering community development, social justice, and school transformation;
and is committed to using the results of scholarly research to advance
democratic practice. |
