Overview

The Harvard Educational Review (ISSN 0017-8055) is a scholarly journal of opinion and research in education. Its mission is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for discussion and debate about education's most vital issues. Since its founding in 1930, the Review has become one of the most prestigious journals in education, with circulation to policymakers, researchers, administrators, and teachers.

Each year, the Review covers a wide range of topics of current concern in education. Each quarterly issue of the Review is book length, containing a variety of articles, essays, and book reviews.

A subscription to the Review includes access to the full-text electronic archives at www.edreview.org. Dating back to the Winter 1993 issue, this fully searchable website hosts value-added extras such as excerpts from recent Harvard Education Press books. Institutional subscribers may use IP authentication to support this service. For more information on subscribing to the Review, click here.

The Editorial Board

The Review's editorial work is performed by an Editorial Board made up of Harvard doctoral students. This Board, which is autonomous in its editorial decision-making, is responsible for selecting from among the more than 350 manuscripts submitted annually and editing all the material published in the Review. Board members serve for two years and bring a wide range of educational interests and expertise to the Review. Former Board members include MacArthur Fellows Sara Lawrence Lightfoot, Lisa Delpit, and Michael Schudson as well as many leading educational researchers, administrators, policy makers, and practitioners.

To Join the Board

The Harvard Educational Review was founded in 1930 as a scholarly journal of opinion and research in education. Among educational journals, HER is unique in that, since 1945, editorial decisions have been carried out by an autonomous doctoral student Editorial Board. HER's student Board works together to bring to publication provocative manuscripts on a wide range of topics from a number of disciplines. Any doctoral candidate currently matriculating at Harvard University is encouraged to consider applying.

Joining the HER Editorial Board requires a two-year commitment, beginning in late May of the year of application. The editorial work of the Board includes:

Outside of manuscript-related activities, Board members are also responsible for writing reviews on books of their own choosing, which appear in the pages of the Review.

Special Issues and Symposia

Periodically the Review devotes an entire issue to a specific topic. In Spring 2005, we published a Special Issue, Education Past and Present. Conceived as a commemoration of the Harvard Educational Review's 75th anniversary, this book offers new insights into educational history, psychology, policy, international education, and U.S. public education. Our Special Issue on Popular Culture and Education, was published in Fall 2003. The Fall 2001 issue, Special Issue on Immigration and Education, has found continuing relevance to the field and is used in widely in courses. The Review has published Special Issues on such diverse topics as Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgendered People and Education, violence and youth, and racism in education.

In addition, the Review publishes Symposia on special topics. The Review's Summer 1998 issue included a Symposium on Colonialism and Working-Class Resistance: Puerto Rican Education in the United States. This issue is now available in both English and Spanish. The Winter 97 issue featured a Symposium: The History of Women in Education and the Summer 1997 issue contained a Symposium on Ethnicity and Education.

The HER Reprint Book Series

An important outgrowth of the popularity of our Special Issues and Symposia is the HER Reprint Book Series. These books reflect the Editorial Board's commitment to continuing and extending the original discussions that appeared in the Review on issues of concern to the educational community.
